
When you go west from Big Bazaar near the railway station, you reach the beach within one kilometre and you can turn north towards the Lions Children’s park and the North Beach Walk begins. The beach behind this park is very crowded and you have to move at least one km to the north to reach less crowded and peaceful beaches. The next landmarks are Puthiya Kadavu, Bhatt Road, Thoppayil, Konadu and the Fisheries office. Further north are the Vellayil police station, Koya Road, Puithyappa, Radio Mango, Vengaly and finally the little riverside village of Elathur. Vallikkattu Kavu is a 27 acre sacred grove in a swamp at Edakkara near Elathur. You can see monkeys, peacocks, wild boars, porcupines, wild hens, different kinds of butterflies and numerous species of orchids here. West Hill is very near Mananchira pond in Calicut. The road north of the head post office takes you to Vandipettah, Chakkorathukulam, Rotary youth Centgre, Kanakalaya Bank and West Hill Chungam. The post office junction at West Hill is the landmark for turning right to St.Jospeh’s school and St.Michael’s school. Two other road to the right side takes you to Chakkarothkulam and Bilathikkulam areas. When you proceed further north from West Hill, you pass the government polytechnic college on the right and the helipad on the left. The government guest house, the rest house and the engineering college are in this area. The big junction is called ‘West Hill Chungam’ where you have two restaurants—one is the US Pizza and the other is the ethnic Thalassery restaurant. When you turn left from the junction, you enter the Bhatt road leading to the beach. This junction also has an IAS Academy, an IIKM college and a Christian college office. The government has opened a passport service station in the junction making it a popular hangout of expatriates.
