Walks near Calicut Railway Station

Mananchira Maidhan
Walking north from Calicut railway station takes you a road overbridge.  You have to turn right and again left to reach the Oyitti road.  Vaikom Mohammed Basheer road takes you to the district library and moving right takes you to Crown Theatre where English films are screened regularly.  This theatre is considered as the hangout of the expatriate elite of Calicut.  There are coffee shops inside.  The next landmark is the Mananchira Pond, the very heart of Calicut with a graceful park around it.  Turning left takes you to the Head Post Office road with Paragon Restaurant on your left.  This restaurant is famous for Mutton dishes but it is a little bit crowded.  Next is the YMCA and a shop selling Air Rifles.  The sprawling campus of Malabar Christian College is one your right with the majestic St.Joseph Church and the English Church at the next junction.  The office of the post master general is the next landmark and you can return to the city by taking a right diversion.

Cherootty Road is one of the main shopping streets of Kozhikode city in India.  There are showrooms of important brands like Paragon, Raymond and Woodlands.  Gandhi Peace Foundation has their city office here.  Mathrubhumi newspaper office is at the extreme end of Cherootty road.
